♠ a fine gift you have my thanks ♠

Basics

NAME: Twisted Fate
AGE: Approx. 35
NATIONALITY: Dalish
RACE: Elf
OCCUPATION: Card shark/Mage.
HEIGHT: 5'4", acts like he's 6'0".
BUILD: Lean, like many an elf. Still muscular.
HAIR: Dark brown.
EYES: Blue.
BEARING: Smug and up to something.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Falon'Din vallaslin on his face, an Orlesian silken shirt, fine cobbled boots, and a dandy hat. Does not dress like a typical Dalish elf at all. Predictably handsome. He's an elf, like you're even surprised.
Status

♠ Occasionally is rifling through people's things. Maybe rearranging them. It was funny at the time.
♠ Maybe he took your socks. The nice ones.
♠ Usually can be found in a tavern, inviting someone to a game of Wicked Grace.
♠ Can also be found in the Blooming Rose frequently.

Reputation

♠ He's primarily known as "Twisted Fate" publicly, but there are some in the Inquisition that know him as Tobrevas.
♠ Is a known trickster, thief, and card shark.
♠ He's a mage. He doesn't flaunt it, but it's not a shocking bit of news either.
♠ Though he's Dalish, he's made an effort to cover his accent. It's said it comes out when he's intoxicated.
♠ The rumor goes that he betrayed his friend to a Tevinter magister, abandoning him to slavery.

Hooks

♠ Twisted Fate is incredibly nosy and social. If you don't mind him chatting you up, then expect him to interact with you. He welcomes people to deposit personal information to him, so if they like telling their life story, he's probably all ears -- no pun intended.
♠ He's also something of a trickster, so if you like your character getting punked, then look no further.
♠ He's also a gigantic flirt and will probably make a pass at you at least once.

Approval & Gifts

APPROVES
+ A sense of humor.
+ Playfulness.
+ Helping Dalish clans earns some slight approval.
+ Agreeing to play games with him, such as pranking, card games, etc.
+ Earning money.
+ Flirting.
+ Forgiveness.
DISAPPROVES
- Anything formally traditional, especially if it's very Dalish.
- Tevinter magisters.
- Having a stick up your ass. It's funny at first, but it's quickly boring after that.
- Anything bad happening to his clothes.
- Being too religious earns slight disapproval, regardless of its nature.

GIFTS
♠ Money!
♠ Gold!
♠ Expensive things! Twisted Fate is a big fan of most things from Orlais.
♠ Anything someone made for him. It gives the impression of a personal flair. Even if it's not well made, he would be oddly flattered.
♠ Anything classically romantic. Flowers, poetry, etc.

History

Here is Twisted Fate's canonical background, but since he's being adapted into the world of Thedas, here's a rundown for his history:

♠ Tobrevas was born to the Frandruil clan among the Free Marches along the line of a major river. The clan did their best to avoid potential aggressive confrontations, as well as turning away any city elves seeking refuge among them. While willing to trade their goods for short welcomes, the clan held disinterest in being close with anyone other than its own people. Strict rule adherence never suited Tobrevas, and the boy found himself in many disagreements with his clan in terms of how to handle contact with those outside their clan. When he came of age, his vallaslin was of Falon'Din.
♠ As a boy, Tobrevas eventually found too many disagreements with his clan after a particular incident. His rambunctious behavior and disinclination to follow guidance eventually forced him to leave his clan at a young age.
♠ In his years growing up, Tobrevas used his magic for less than honest deeds and developed a knack for sleight of hand. He used his magic to get out of tight situations while he conned, swindled, and stole from many.
♠ At age fifteen, Tobrevas found himself in a game of Wicked Grace, prepared to con the Vashoth sitting across from him. The game went on for quite sometime until both men figured out they were attempting to cheat each other out. Finding a kindred spirit, Tobrevas eventually joined forces with the Vashoth who introduced himself as Graves. For ten years, the pair worked together, swindling and stealing across Thedas. No job was too big for them for a long time. Eventually, Tobrevas discovered his real name was Malsaam.
♠ Until they reached Tevinter, where Graves planned their biggest score against a powerful magister named Priggs. Incredibly wary, Tobrevas insisted they back away from the job, but his partner disagreed and told him to simply watch his back and the job would go fine. Unfortunately, as it became clear that the job was going south, Tobrevas abandoned his best friend, ordering the rest of their crew to fall back. Graves was taken and thrown into slavery. Although Tobrevas attempted to rescue his friend, it caused the rest of the crew to be killed, forcing Tobrevas to back out reluctantly.
♠ Due to the impact of that day, Tobrevas took on a new name since then, calling himself Twisted Fate. He played himself more cautiously, keeping himself apart from people personally as he continued his thievery across Thedas, hoarding his winnings to himself. Eventually, he started to do some less than savory deeds for Priggs on the agreement that Graves would be released.
♠ Eventually, Twisted Fate gained word that his old friend broke out of Priggs' hold, after ten years of slavery. At first he was glad to hear that his friend was free, but quickly heard rumors of him demanding blood in vengeance from how he'd been betrayed. Twisted Fate, thinking that Graves would be impossible to convince, put himself on the run for a time -- until the Inquisition established itself. Deciding that he could find protection in the Inquisition, he volunteered his services as mage and thief alike.
♠ Twisted Fate disappeared from the Inquisition about a year ago. He claims he was out on a long mission.

Personality

Twisted Fate is of always of the inclination to find ways of robbing people blind, and he does so in a multitude of different ways. Ever since he was a boy, Twisted Fate has developed his skills in using his wit to manipulate people, pulling their strings verbally like a puppeteer to either flatter them or rile them up. Either way, this makes it easier to trick them and play them into his hand. When playing with Twisted Fate, no matter what he'll have found a way to stack the odds against you.

Which brings a matter of his selfishness into play. As a boy, Twisted Fate feels he was abandoned by his clan, and henceforth grew up with the mindset of looking out purely for himself and protecting himself. This means trying to define Twisted Fate's intentions are difficult other than he benefits in some way by interacting with someone. The only thing he'll hide is what those benefits are, but he does unusually have a way of expressing that he is using you, yet convinces you to go along with it anyway.

This is not to say that Twisted Fate is incapable of loyalty to a person, but that it is exceptionally rare. Someone worth mentioning in this sort of scenario is the mercenary and cutthroat, the vashoth he'd met years ago and the first person in years who he had called friend. It's important to mention his relationship with the vashoth, as the botched job affected Tobrevas enough for him to dispose of his name and go by another in order to attempt to begin his life anew. What to take away from Twisted Fate's perspective on loyalties is that he attempts to not devote much emotionally in many people, remaining selective in terms of his relationships. He is never above lying to friend or otherwise if it means he can gain something from it, or protect himself. Unless he has a strong relationship with a person, he will not hesitate to turn his back on them to keep himself safe.

And even if he were to remain in a fight for someone he feels strongly for or is running from a fight to protect himself and his assets, Twisted Fate has a certain oddity about how he responds to situations. For example, keeping his appearances -- both emotionally and physically -- is insanely important to him. Ever since coming into money for himself, Twisted Fate has spent large amounts of it on himself and his own comforts. He despises ruining his appearance, but if it's life or death, he will reluctantly go into a mess to survive an occasion.

All in all, Twisted Fate is an intelligent man, interested in his own assets and surviving. If it comes down to a perfect stranger or himself, he will almost certainly choose himself over anyone else, using his words and playing someone until he gets what he wants.

Opinions & Affiliations

DALISH: Mixed feelings. Twisted Fate tends to think that most clans are up their own asses and need to move on from the past. That said, he still has tender feelings for them and doesn't want anything bad to happen to them, but he wishes more clans cared about the rest of the damned world.
CHANTRY: He's not thrilled about the Chantry. Hard pass.
TEMPLARS: Mixed feelings. Fate dislikes the idea of the Templars as a whole, but has met some exemplary individuals he's fond of. He'd rather they were just disbanded, in general.
CIRCLE: Hard pass. He has zero support for the Circle.
TEVINTER: Another hard pass. Fate has nothing but unpleasant experiences with Tevinter.
MAGES: Mage freedom babyyyyy.
QUNARI: Fate tends to lend more respect to Vashoth and Tal-Vashoth than the Qunari themselves. The Qun, from what he knows, sounds pretty shitty.
CITY ELVES: It sucks that they're poor and treated like dirt. He has far more sympathy for them than Dalish.
ORLAIS: Loves the fashion and fancy crap and the politics can be fun, but overall he looks down distinctly on nobles who use their wealth to step on the weaker people.
DWARVES: Damn they can grow impressive beards. And he can't! This is unfair.
RIFTERS: They're a fascinating bunch. Fate doesn't feel particularly threatened by them, even if they can be kind of weird.

Adaptation Notes

Fate's canonical background describes the river folk as nomadic people who are looked down upon by the rest of average society for their "strange ways", all the while also considered exotic and their goods acceptable for trade. Overall, a lot of matters to do with the river people tended to make me think of them as mostly like the Dalish than any other Nationality. When I apped TF before, I did hem and haw a bit about whether to make him a rogue or a mage, but ultimately I feel his magic is more important to him than his roguish skills.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:
♠ Twisted Fate has incredible sleight of hand. He's ridiculous at parlor tricks and misdirection. Suffice it to say, he's a decent thief and can lock pick effectively, but you may find that some rogues like Sera are, frankly, more successful thieves whereas Twisted Fate is more a master of misdirection.
♠ He's a decent mage, mostly finding his way in stunning his enemies before he releases his attacks. He finds he can use the Fade to transport himself quickly, and push enemies away. Twisted Fate is someone who keeps his enemies as far from himself as possible, but doesn't seem to have much interest in pursuing knowledge in magic if he can't use it for his own monetary gain. This means his healing and barrier magic, in particular, is not very reliable.
♠ Twisted Fate is incredibly charismatic, and can lie a thousand ways. He can be very convincing in the tales he can spin and how he charms people.
♠ He's ridiculously good at finding ways to piss people off, though it's really up to you to decide if that's a strength or a weakness in various circumstances.
♠ Although he's far from being a brute, he's usually decent at thinking of escape routes if and when he needs to.
♠ Twisted Fate's absolute best skill is as an escape artist. Thus far, he has not discovered a prison, knot, or cuffs that can hold him. Although he is fair at magic and thievery, he is best at being uncatchable.

Weaknesses:
♠ He cannot swim and has a fear of drowning.
♠ Twisted Fate is something of a glass cannon, though this is true for many mages. He has weak barriers and tends to focus on escaping his enemies or setting them on fire.
♠ His vanity can be his undoing, as he will do his best to keep his appearance from getting too ruffled. This includes doing his best in keeping blood off his person, especially his clothes.
♠ Sometimes he can be too good at pissing people off, finding ways to verbally antagonize them.

Inventory

♠ Two decks of cards.
♠ A staff, naturally.
♠ A copy of Swords and Shields.
♠ An excessive amount of hats and money.
♠ An impressively strong bow more suited for a Qunari than an elf.

Motivation

He wants to stay alive and not get killed by his ex-partner or captured/killed by a Tevinter magister. Also, he's coming back for his friends. D'awww.

CR Chart - Fade Rift

like dislike neutral

ANDERS
The Anders, as it were. Has a surprisingly good sense of humor, and certainly still focused on mage rights, to no one's surprise. I believe he desires a second chance. I can't turn my back on that. I'd ask the same. I trust him enough, and whenever Justice can be removed I am inclined to trust him more.
THE IRON BULL
Qunari, but knows how to have fun. So long as he isn't about to brainwash anyone anytime soon, then I think we're going to get along swimmingly. Can read people especially well, and that's a mixed blessing. A brute with a brain is fascinating and worrisome.
MORRIGAN
Infamous Witch of the Wilds. Well-spoken and intelligent, but probably scheming something, as are we all. I have a great deal of respect for her, and her son is quite charming.
NERVA
Stern, focused, and everything I'm not. She protects me, she loves me, and trusts me. Creators, I believe that I do as well. I don't want to regret this. Please, please don't make me regret this, love.
ZEVRAN ARAINAI
Handsome, dashing, roguish, and fun. Skilled lover. Recently he's just survived being captured by the Crows. I care more than I like to say, but I want him to be well. Fortunately, he has a surplus of people who are fond of him who will see to that. Despite myself, I think that I do trust him completely. A good friend.
KORRIN ATAASH
Speaks her mind, stubborn and determined. Also a skilled lover. I haven't had a close friend in a long time, and she is the closest I've had in years. Korrin is smart and doesn't take anyone's crap. I like that about her. I'm under the impression that she's immensely fond of Araceli. I hope wherever it takes them, it goes well for Korrin. She deserves to be happy. I trust her without question.
ADELAIDE LEBLANC
Elegant and respectable. Hard working. Forgets to have fun. Happy to remind her. She cares immensely about everything. Perhaps Compassion truly is an adequate match, but she deserves to have time for herself.
ARACELI
Lovely and has a fondness for games. I can respect that. Korrin and her seem fond of each other. I hope it goes well.
BELETH ASHARA
Firmly following in the steps of the People, which is a big mistake if I've ever seen one. Unquestionably, Beleth is brilliant, clever, and incredibly frustrating at times, but I do have something of respect for her. She helped me once with a troubling family matter; it's difficult to turn my nose down at her now.
CADE HARIMANN
A peculiar Templar. He's a bit of a twitch, but then I don't imagine being a Templar has come without its scars. Cade is troubled and a ticking time bomb, but I don't particularly dislike him either.
CYRIL ASHARA
That adorable face could probably get away with a lot, honestly. Cyril is kind and caring, willing to spend time to distract someone for pleasure or because they need it. He has a good heart. I would not throw it away, if I could.
TAASHATH
Tal-Vashoth. I'd climb that in an instant. A bit concerning that Taas lost himself during the Crow matter, but all things considered, I don't think it's unusual. Brainwashing is hard to cycle out of. Hopefully he will see that.
MALCOLM REYNOLDS
Malcolm seems a bit of a jack of all trades. I appreciate his willingness to do work and his loyalty to his companions, even if he's a bit nosy. Perhaps rightfully so, but my things are my things. I'd hire him again.
RIVER TAM
An odd girl, and for reasons I think root back to Tevinter. I'm not willing to explore that and River has all the help she needs. I want Bean to be well, but there's not much I can really do, except entertain and dance. So here I am, for now.
SAMWISE GAMGEE
Hobbit, not a dwarf. Sort of adorable. Samwise makes me want to be a better person sometimes, but we all know how likely that is. Seems to have a knack of getting himself into trouble.

Some specifics from Twisted Fate:

Would you rather he never, ever touch your personal effects ever? Granted, I don't really like making assumptions and will probably ask you if it's okay anyway, but if you just straight up don't want his mitts on your stuff, let me know.
UN-ROMANCEABLE? Twisted Fate is a bit of a flirt, and he will probably tease your character at least once. If you straight up don't want this, just let me know.
